I’ve taught writing workshops and lecture courses for over thirty years, and offer group workshops or lectures for 5-10 people, in-person or virtually, on the following topics. All workshops can be intensive day or two-day in person or up to a month long if virtual.

Conversations Between Word and Image

How do you write or create art in response to another work of art? This workshop focuses on creating writing (poetry or essay) that responds to an art work OR art that responds to a poem or other written piece. It can be tailor-made to your group’s desires.

Poetry Writing

We’ll write lots of poems in this workshop. Can focus on specific forms, free verse, the long or short poem or themes. Again, tailor-made for your group.

A dear group of Texas writers who took a poetry intensive with me. Thanks to Bob McCrainie for organizing.

The Lyric Essay

What’s a lyric essay? I like to think of it as a poem wearing comfortable clothes. Think poetry without the line breaks, think an essay that acts like a poem. See these two books for examples of this style of writing, which I love: Fifty Miles and Navigating Disaster: Sixteen Essays of Love and a Poem of Despair

Writing the Hard Stuff

Writing about/through loss, family trauma, substance abuse, deaths, etc. Unfortunately for me, this is one of my special areas. I’ve written about the deaths of my father and brothers and son due to substance abuse and addiction, and my own road to recovery (see Fifty Miles again).

Sometimes it helps to be in a beautiful place when writing the hard stuff. A few photos from writing trips I took with students:

Here we are studying writing in Peru.
We can write anywhere, even on a small boat in the middle of the Amazon jungle.
Sometimes you just want to be at home to write. A group of writing students in front of my birth home in Louisiana.

Wildcard

Is there something you’d like to learn that’s not listed here (limited to writing and fiber art–I don’t teach how to grow bananas, although I do grow them!), make me a proposal and we’ll see what is possible.

Fiber Art

I offer beginning classes in fabric dyeing, quilting and improvisational piecing. See below for examples of some of the kind of things we can make together.
